Prof. Christiane Iven


Prof. Christiane Iven, who bears the honorary title of ‘Kammersängerin’, is a concert, lieder and operatic singer who was much sought after internationally until she retired from the stage in 2016.

Born in Hamburg, she studied in her home city under Judith Beckmann and under Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in Berlin. She won prizes at the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb and at a number of international music competitions.

She was for many years. among other things, a member of the ensemble of the the Stuttgart State Opera. There, and in a number of other German and European opera houses, she sang such parts as Feldmarschallin (Rosenkavalier), Agathe (Freischütz), Dido (Les Troyens), Marie (Wozzeck), Kundry (Parsifal), the title role in Strauss’s Ariadne, Alice Ford (Falstaff), Elvira (Don Giovanni), Emilia Marty (Die Sache Makropulos), Sieglinde (Walküre) and Isolde (Tristan und Isolde).

She gave concerts with major orchestras, including the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam, the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Munich Philharmonic, the Czech Philharmonix, the Ensemble intercontemporaine and the NDR Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marc Albrecht, Teodor Currentzis, Michael Gielen, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Heinz Holliger, Eliahu Inbal, Marco Letonja, Sir Neville Marriner, Helmut Rilling, Christian Zacharias and many others.

Another focus in Christiane Iven’s artistic career was represented by her lieder recitals with András Schiff, Burkhard Kehring, Wolfram Rieger, Jan Philip Schulze and others. She was a guest at the great music festivals, including the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Lucerne Festival, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Music Festival and the SWR Festival in Schwetzingen.

For her outstanding artistic achievements she was awarded the Niedersächsischer Staatspreis (State Prize of Lower Saxony) and the honorary title of Kammersängerin by the state of Baden-Württemberg.

From 2001 to 2007 she was professor at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien in Hanover. Since the winter semester 2013/14 she has held a professorship of song at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Munich. In addition, she often sits on juries at international singing competitions.

Christiane Iven gives numerous master classes, for example at the Internationale Musikakademie für Solisten (International Music Academy for Soloists, IMAS), at Taipeh University, at the International Bach Academy in Stuttgart and at the Summer Academy held by the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

As an active member of the Bundesverband Deutscher Gesangspädagogen (BDG, Federal Association of German Singing Teachers) she organizes in-service training events in Munich encompassing all topics concerned with the general theme of ‘voice’.

In order to expand and enrich her teaching activities, Christiane Iven underwent comprehensive training in Transactional Analysis and is active in consultancy and supervision for artists, musicians and teachers.
